If you're sourcing LG Energy Solution batteries for an energy storage project, an EV line, or a residential backup system—and you're not rolling in a six-figure budget—this is for you. I wrote this because when I first started buying from LG, I was a small-scale integrator. I didn't get red carpet treatment. I sent inquiries and got standard responses.
And I made mistakes. Which is why I built this checklist. Over four years, I've reviewed maybe 200+ battery deliveries annually for our small team. It's taught me that the difference between a good deal and a costly one often comes down to what you check before signing. Here are the five steps I follow every time—and one thing most people overlook.
Step 1: Cross-Reference the Spec Sheet Against Your Actual Load
You'd be surprised how many people order a battery based on the nominal voltage and capacity, then find out the continuous discharge rate isn't enough for their peak load. That's the first thing I check.
What I do: I pull the official datasheet from LG (which they'll send you via their B2B portal, or a distributor can provide it). Then I match three numbers against our project requirements:
- Continuous discharge current (A) vs. your peak load (kW/V)
- Depth of discharge (DoD) for cycle life—LG's LFP cells usually offer 80% DoD for 6000+ cycles, but double-check the model version
- Operating temperature range—especially if your installation is outdoors in, say, South Australia (where ambient temps can hit 45°C)
I learned this the hard way. My first order of a mid-range ESS battery looked perfect on paper—until our inverter demanded surge current that the BMS couldn't handle. We had to run a derated profile for three months until a firmware update saved us. That inspection gap cost a week of commissioning work. Now I never assume 'compatible' means 'matched.'
Step 2: Verify the Production Batch and Plant Origin
LG Energy Solution runs multiple factories—their Poland plant is the main hub for European ESS deliveries, but cells also come from Korea and China for different product lines. I always confirm which plant produced my batch.
Why it matters: Solid-state battery research cells and production-grade LFP cells have different traceability requirements. If you're testing a prototype solid-state pouch cell for an R&D project, you need to know it came from the qualified pilot line—not a general assembly. The batch number on the box tells you. I just send a photo to our LG rep and ask for the production history. (Should mention: we always ask for this before payment, not after.)
One time I assumed all RESU units were built to the same standard. Turned out the batch from one shift had slightly different BMS firmware than the one we'd tested. The performance difference was marginal—I think maybe 2% less usable capacity—but it would have mattered in a system calibration. Now I'm pretty specific about batch numbers.
Step 3: Physical Inspection—Don't Skip the Visual Check
I know it's tempting to just count boxes and sign the delivery note. But I've caught things that would have been expensive later by spending 10 minutes on a visual check.
My checklist for when the pallet arrives:
- Check for damage to terminals—even minor bending can affect connection torque specs
- Look at the serial number alignment—on LG's ESS cabinets, the serial labels should be cleanly applied, not crooked (I know that sounds petty, but crooked labels in a production batch hint at rushed handling after rework)
- Open one unit and check the cell grouping—cells should be evenly spaced, no visible swelling or electrolyte residue
- Weigh a random box against the spec weight—I've had a batch that was 20 kg lighter than spec, which later traced back to missing thermal pads
I only believed in this step after ignoring it once and receiving a batch of EV battery modules that had visible tool marks on the casing. The vendor claimed it was 'cosmetic only'—I rejected it anyway. Turned out the marks were from a fixturing issue in the Poland plant. They re-did it at their cost. Now every contract I write includes a visual acceptance clause.
Step 4: Run a Basic BMS Communication Check
Here's the step most small buyers skip because it seems technical. But it's fairly simple: connect the battery to your BMS interface (or a CAN bus reader) and verify that the key parameters reported match the spec. I'm looking for:
- State of charge (SoC) reading at delivery—should be around 50% (storage level); if it's 0% or 100%, something happened in transit
- Internal resistance variance across cells (for a new pack, all cells should be within a few milliohms)
- Temperature sensor readings—all sensors should show room temp (+/– a couple degrees)
I should add: if you don't have a CAN bus tool, ask your LG distributor if they can provide a commissioning report from their own testing. Most reputable ones will, at least in my experience. This step alone caught a batch of ESS batteries where one cell string had a 15% higher voltage than the others. That would have caused imbalance within weeks. The distributor replaced the unit before we installed it.
Step 5: Document Everything for the Warranty
I'm not 100% sure about this being the most common mistake, but in my experience, the biggest warranty killer is poor documentation of incoming inspection. LG's standard warranty covers defects in material and workmanship, but you need proof that you received the unit in good condition and followed the storage guidelines.
What I do now:
- Take photos of every side of the packaging before opening (with the date stamp visible)
- Save the batch number and serial number scan in our project folder
- Note the storage environment (temperature, humidity) if we don't install within a week
- Keep a simple log of inspection findings—even if everything passed
I used to think paperwork was the sales guy's problem. Then a warranty claim on a $24,000 ESS system got delayed because we couldn't prove when the battery arrived. The claim later went through—but it took three months. Now I'm borderline obsessive about documentation. Small detail: I keep the photos in a folder named with the PO number and delivery date. Takes maybe 5 minutes.
One Thing Most People Overlook: The Firmware Version
I'd say about half of my deliveries had BMS firmware that wasn't the latest release. That probably sounds like a technical nuance, but for LG's ESS lineup, firmware versions affect charge algorithms and safety cutoffs. I always check the firmware number against the latest one on LG's support portal. If there's a mismatch, I flag it. It's not a rejection reason—but you need to know, because you may need to update before commissioning.
Oh, and if you're using a Renogy 60A MPPT charge controller with an LG battery (which I've seen in off-grid setups here in Adelaide), make sure the charge profile matches the LG BMS request profile. That's not LG's issue—but it's a common oversight that can cause early battery degradation.
Practical Tips for Small Buyers
When I was starting out, I worried that LG wouldn't take my small orders seriously. I think I placed my first $3,000 order with some hesitation. The thing I learned: LG's B2B distributors are used to serving integrators of all sizes. One rep told me that their largest customer today started with a $4,000 trial order four years ago. That stuck with me.
You don't get special treatment for a small order—but you also don't get ignored. What matters is professionalism on your side: have your specs ready, ask for the batch info, and do your inspection thoroughly. Small doesn't mean unimportant—it means you're building a relationship. Treat it that way.
