On larger ESS modules, the nameplate will show LG Energy Solution and a voltage/serial block. If you see only a generic LG mark, with no Energy Solution text and no RESU code, it's likely not a stationary product from LGES—or it's an imported unit with missing documentation.

Take a photo of the nameplate before you install anything. An installer or emergency tech will ask for it either way. Missing that label turns a simple service call into a two-hour research project.

3. Can I use a Smappee home energy monitor with an LG Energy Solution battery?

Short answer: it depends on your inverter and how the system is wired. A Smappee home energy monitor measures whole-home consumption with clamp sensors. It is not a battery controller.

If your LGES RESU is paired with an inverter that supports Modbus, and if Smappee's integration can read that data, you'll see battery charge and discharge in the Smappee dashboard. In many setups, you can also see solar production if you clamp the PV lines separately. What you won't get is full battery control. The inverter's own app still handles charging settings, backup levels, and discharge limits.

From my perspective, a Smappee monitor is worth buying when you want one simple power dashboard. Don't buy it to manage the battery. Buy it to see what's happening in the whole house.

4. What's the best lithium battery for Livescope?

For a Garmin Livescope, the practical answer is a 12V LiFePO4 battery with enough capacity and a built-in BMS that has low-voltage cutoff. I've seen way too many Livescope setups fail because someone used a small jump-starter pack or an old AGM that couldn't hold voltage under sonar load.

For a full day of ice fishing or off-shore use, we spec 20Ah. If you need two days without charging, go 30Ah. A 10Ah pack might get you through a morning, and that's with the transducer on a lower frequency.

  4. Tie the negative cable away from the battery while disconnected.
